Adding Links To WordPress Posts

Adding Links To WordPress Posts

Adding a link to a WordPress blog is extemely easy.  A link is simply a series of words in your post that your visitors can click on and:

  • be taken to a new page on the site,
  • be taken to a completely different website,
  • or even to display an image or file

There are a few considerations when inserting a link into a post – firstly, you need to make sure you have the right website address (or URL) for the link.  Secondly, and we won’t discuss this any further here, you need to make sure that the words your using for you linking text are keywords (or those words that you really want to be found for in the Search Engines).

Using the WordPress Rich Text Editor (RTE) through wp-admin, it is straight forward to insert the link you want.  Here’s an overview of what to do:

  1. When in the Edit Post or Add New Post window, ensure you are using the Visual editor,
  2. Highlight the text you wish to link,
  3. Locate the icon in the formatting bar that looks like a link in a chain (if you hover your mouse over each icon, a little box will display and tell you what they are – you want the one that says “Insert/edit link”) and click on it,
  4. A dialogue box will display :
    • in the Link URL field, enter the full website address that you wish to link to, including the http://
    • From the Target drop down box choose the most appropriate option:
      • Open link in same window
      • Open link in new window
    • In the Title field, enter some descriptive text that uses your keywords
    • Click on the Insert Button

You have inserted a link into your blog post. A video demonstration of how to add a link to your WordPress blog can be found at How To Videos Central – Get Your Business Online.
